Every Tuesday, we're sharing a story, a question, or a dilemma, or an experience sent in by one of our listeners, and together we'll chat about it, hear different perspectives, and hopefully remind ourselves that whatever you're going through, you're not going through it by yourself, right?

So let's make this a safe space.

Are you guys ready?
F1
F12:04

Yes.
F2
F22:05

All right, this is the story, and it starts like this.

I'm a guy in my early 30s, and without fail, every time we do a family gathering, someone will ask, so when are you getting married?
F3
F32:21

Typical.
F2
F22:23

I can hear the frustration already.

Before I can even answer, another relative jumps in with, don't wait too long, good girls get taken very fast.

Then my uncle starts giving me advice about how marriage isn't as expensive as people make it sound.

Meanwhile, my cousin who got married last year is sitting there quietly trying not to make eye contact with me.

The worst part is when they start playing matchmaker.

Oh, my friend's daughter is single.

Hey, what about that girl you brought to Chinese New Year five years ago?

Are you sure you're not hiding a girlfriend from us?

I've tried everything.

I've laughed it off.

I've changed the subject.

I've even pretended to be really interested in the food that's lost its taste.

Nothing works.

Last weekend, I thought I'd finally escape because everyone was busy eating.

Then my grandma looked at me and said, before I leave this world, I just want to see you get married.
F1
F13:31

Oh, yo.
F2
F23:32

How do you even respond to that?

I love my family and I know they mean well, but can we please finish dinner before planning the rest of my life.

And I don't know how to tell my parents that I prefer to stay single for now because I have my own dreams that I want to achieve.

And with them aging, I would rather stay and help them and take care of them.

But no one seems to get me.
F1
F13:57

Selena, I think that's the, uh, that's the storyline for part 3.
M1
M14:01

Oh my God, I get him.
F3
F34:02

It's like they rotate.
F1
F14:04

Yeah, do a fake wedding for this guy.
F3
F34:06

You know, I was gonna say Sebastian does get him because Sebastian's done an entire, entire segment on this very topic, you know, of like aunties coming to ask you, you know, like—
M1
M14:17

Oh, in my Broadway Beng show?
F3
F34:18

Yeah, in your Broadway Beng show.
M1
M14:20

Yeah, yeah, no, like this person, I also chose to be single because I want to stay at home and look after my mother.

Yeah, so there's nothing wrong with that.

And for parents out there, don't think, you know, just because children are married off is a good thing.
F3
F34:37

哇!

Wow!
M1
M14:37

You may never see them again.
F1
F14:39

哇!

Wow!
M1
M14:40

But the ones that's left in their home, those are the ones.
F3
F34:43

Treasure those.

对。

Yes.

Can you come and talk to my son afterwards?
M1
M14:46

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
F2
F24:47

But how do you usually respond to these questions when someone's continuously asking, when are you getting married?

When are you getting married?
M1
M14:54

I just say, oh, just wait.
F1
F14:56

Soon, soon.
M1
M14:57

Oh yeah, just wait.
F1
F14:58

You get the invite.
M1
M14:59

One day, one day.
F1
F15:02

For me, I would...

I think as a guy, you know, or a girl, just start asking them, oh, tell me about your marriage.

Because, you know, if it's a happy marriage, they would love to talk about it and give you advice.

So let them talk.
F2
F25:15

对。

Yeah.
F1
F15:15

If it's not, then eventually what's going to happen is stories of divorce and separation come out, and it just proves your point.

Why are you asking me?

Why aren't you all going to handle it first?
F3
F35:25

Y'all clever.

There's your answer.

I think we don't need to talk anymore.

I mean, that's it, isn't it?

Right, right.
F1
F15:32

Turn the tables around.

They will always love to tell stories and give advice anyway, so just let them talk.

It doesn't matter, don't worry.

I mean, the problem is if they start injecting themselves into your life outside of the dinner, that's a different, you know, ball of wax already.
F2
F25:50

I think a lot of people have gone through this moment where they go to family gatherings and then they keep asking, when are you getting married?

I mean, what's the most ridiculous thing a relative has ever said to you or asked you about?
F1
F16:05

How much money you make.
F3
F36:06

Oh yes, that's right.
F1
F16:08

Not me personally, but I've heard stories.
F3
F36:09

It's very common.

I mean, people seem to think that it's okay to talk about, to ask you about like money or like your personal life.

I don't know why that is the case, but it has happened.
F1
F16:19

What other things did they ask of you?
M1
M16:23

Me?

Um, I don't know.
F1
F16:25

Or about what you do in your spare time.
M1
M16:28

It's like, no, no, no, it's like, what is your real job?
F3
F36:32

Oh, what is your real job is a good one.
M1
M16:34

对。

Yeah.
F2
F26:34

What do you actually do?
M1
M16:35

I've been an actor for many, many years and there are still people asking.
F1
F16:40

You see, so you see, this is me in the debate at the dinner.

Okay, this is the start, this kind of thing, because the attitude.

Now, as we have seen in recent times in the news about how, you know, artists and art and art people probably are not appreciated as much by the powers that be, you know what I mean?
M1
M17:00

对。

Right.
F1
F17:00

I can't even imagine a legend being asked.
M1
M17:04

Maybe not of late, but then, yeah, I used to get questions like that.

Yeah, when I was younger.
F2
F27:10

Yeah, very interesting.

So what do you guys think?

Is the question, when are you getting married, still considered, you know, harmless small talk, or has it become one of those questions we really need to retire in this day and age?
F3
F37:24

I think we shouldn't have had it in the first place.

I mean, I think people, I mean, you know, when you look for small talk—well, I don't know why people look for small talk, but—but when you're engaging in a conversation, I mean, you wouldn't really ask the person like, you know, why are you wearing blue?

I mean, it's a really weird way to get into the conversation, right?

I mean, I think you kind of like maybe share a little bit about yourself and talk about something else, like an event or something.

And then, you know, if the other person wants to share something that's personal, then that's their prerogative.

You never ask somebody straight out a personal question.
M1
M17:59

I think we don't, right?

But then there are people who still ask personal questions like, like these.
F1
F18:04

But I think the problem is also that it's become like an expected thing, you know, partially because, yes, they really are curious on when you're going to get married.

But other things is like, this is how I small talk.

This is how Singaporeans small talk.

We start off with that, you know, with, uh, are you getting married or not?

Or, or like, you know, yeah, what you up to now?

What are you doing?

What are you doing?

What are you doing?

What's your, what's your career?
F3
F38:24

So your answer should be, so when are you getting divorced?
F1
F18:28

Well, I mean— Sorry, the joke of like when you're at a wedding and then a, a relative says, oh, you're the next, right?

And then when you see them at a funeral, you, you go to that relative and say, ah, you're the next.

Please don't do that, you might give them a heart attack.

没错。

Exactly.
F3
F38:48

And then it would be their turn.
F2
F28:50

But on that note, I think one of the hardest lines from this story is that the grandmother said, before I leave this world, I want to see you get married.

Now that's almost impossible to argue against, right?

How would you respond if your grandparents said something like that?
F1
F19:08

Have a wedding party.

Just pretend.

Choose masquerade.

Choose wedding, man.
F3
F39:12

There's this movie I watched, this movie is called Rental Family.

Oh, did you watch it?

有 Brendan Fraser 演的。

With Brendan Fraser.

So they staged the entire wedding.

For the parents.
F1
F19:21

I saw the trailer.
F3
F39:22

So yeah, they say, and we will also hire ourselves out for weddings.
F1
F19:25

Singapore

Many performers in Singapore.
M1
M19:26

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
F1
F19:27

对。

Yeah.
M1
M19:27

Come get married.
F2
F29:29

And you can just say, oh, Vernetta Lopez and Sebastian Tan and Selena Tan are going to be at my wedding.
F1
F19:34

They're my bridesmaids.
F3
F39:36

And then they completely leave you alone after that.
F1
F19:39

But I think, you know, I wouldn't say it's unfair, but it is in a way unfair.

Like, you know, oh, do this for me, and you pressure the young generation.

But I'm very lucky because I have in-laws and parents who actually don't pressure me that way.

I'm talking about babies here because I don't have kids, but, uh, they've never pressured me to say, when you have a baby, when you have a baby, when you have a baby, you know what I mean?

So I'm lucky in that way.

But there are many who do have families who kind of like on their deathbed kind of like moment, right?

You make sure you take care of my baby, you know, you take care of her.

And then, you know, if they want to get a divorce, cannot, because I promised my grandmother, you know what I mean?
M1
M110:15

对。

Yeah.
F1
F110:16

So I understand why it's a difficult thing.

But, uh, I would say don't worry, Grandma, it will happen.

Whether it happens or not doesn't matter.

Or you can stage one for fun.

People actually have staged weddings, you know, for loved ones.
F3
F310:28

在 Japan 吗?

In Japan?
F1
F110:29

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

So, so whatever the situation is, I think if you're there for her no matter what, I don't think she's going to complain too much.
F2
F210:36

Definitely.

对。

Right.

I mean, it also never ends, right?

Maybe you do get married and then the next question is, when are you gonna have kids?
F1
F110:44

对。

Yes.
F2
F210:44

And then it just continues and and continues and continues.
F3
F310:47

After when are you going to have kids, what's next?
M1
M110:50

Oh, are you going to have the second one?
F1
F110:51

Or third one?

No, then as the next generation, you have to pass it on to the next generation.

Then how are your kids studying?
F2
F211:00

How well are they doing?
F1
F111:01

Which university are they going to?

That's the next question.

Things to look forward to.

Hey Singapore, why don't we do this?

The next time someone asks that question, when are you getting married?

You say, well, how much ang bao are you going to give me?

How about that?
F3
F311:13

Then they say a very nice amount, then you have to get married.

I would say do it.
F1
F111:18

Then yeah, if it's gonna be that good.
F2
F211:20

I mean, I think Venatia has given us a lot of comebacks to a lot of these questions here.

But final thoughts here, do you have any other advice for this writer here?

I mean, how should he go about this situation?
M1
M111:33

I think don't be pressured.

Just, you know, if you don't want to get married in Singapore, it's fine.

I think the government is very keen on what I say, but you know, there is space for single people.

There's a path for you.
F3
F311:49

对。

Yeah.
M1
M111:49

So don't, don't, please don't get married for the sake of it.
F3
F311:52

And they're already lowering the age for singles to get flats.
F1
F111:55

They are.
F3
F311:55

没错。

That's true.

So you don't need to get married.
F1
F111:58

对。

Yeah.
F3
F311:58

So you just tell your grandmother, your mother, see, even my government thinks I can continue living a good life.
M1
M112:04

And if you're single, your life will be like a buffet, you know, like—.
F1
F112:08

Back to the masquerade party.
M1
M112:09

You can get endless bread.
F1
F112:11

But just to be on the other side of the coin, because these two are like, no need, no need, no need.

Remember Singapore's, uh, TFR rate is quite low.

Total fertility rate is quite low.

So please, uh, you know, go get married, have babies.
M1
M112:23

Okay, immigration.
F3
F312:24

I think we can do with fewer people.
M1
M112:26

We welcome immigration.
F1
F112:27

Yeah, then we don't need to clear forest, we just have to, you know, forest alone.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

But don't be pressured.

I think, you know, just live your own life.

Be true to yourself, otherwise you're gonna just be in trouble.
F3
F312:39

I don't think he's gonna be pressured.

I don't think—I think he's on the right track.

I mean, he's like, you know, stood his ground all the way to grandmother.
F1
F112:45

Or better yet, don't go for the dinner.
F3
F312:48

I think that's a sad thing.

So I think that's what the older folk don't realise, that, you know, after a while, you know, the younger ones won't turn up anymore.

So, you know, yeah, I think, I think, uh, for the older generation, I know it's nice to see the babies and all that, but enjoy the generation now.

For what they are, you know.

And if they're pressurised, they either will move further away, like Selena says, or they just will resent you to a degree, you know.

But at the same time, I think the young generation now, they live for themselves so passionately that I don't think they're going to be any more pressured.

Maybe this guy who wants to, you know, you just give— take the advice we give you, what to say, you'll be fine.

Just keep bonding with the family, let them tell you their stories, and they will feel great.

Don't worry about it.
