It's time now for What's Trending.

I'm Hongbin Jeong, and joining me here in the studio are our show producers Nadia Koh and Nazir Azra.

Hi guys!
F2
F20:25

Hi Hongbin, welcome back.

We are finally the triple threat or the Terrible Three.
F1
F10:32

I think we should be the Terrific Three.
M1
M10:36

Yes, that is right.

And welcome back, Hongbin.

Happy to have you with us again.
F1
F10:39

I missed you all while I was under the weather.

And let's get started with what's trending.

Now I've got to ask the both of you, as well as our listeners, let's rewind back to our childhood days, okay?

Back to our schooling days.
M1
M11:25

好。

Okay.
F1
F11:26

When you were younger, have you ever, you know, tried to sneak a snack in while the teacher wasn't looking?

And come on, be honest, okay?

We've all been there, right?

You're sliding a chip into your mouth, chewing in absolute slow motion, pretending to cough, you know, absolute peak adrenaline.

Let us know, WhatsApp.

8855 0893.

Nadia

Nadia is looking at me like she is guilty of something.

I'm assuming you definitely tried this before?
F2
F21:52

I mean, Hongbin, you say be honest, right?

But it's been like 3 decades since I was a school kid, so it's not like my teachers can come after me right now.

So of course it's a rite of passage for all students. We've all done it before with sweets, candy, sometimes canteen snacks or even sugared drinks when we're not allowed to drink sugared drinks.
M1
M12:11

Yes, I agree.

But it was harder for me because I was sitting way at the front in front of the teacher's table.

You were a good kid.

No, they put it— they put me in front.

They put me in front.

So this, for the first 3 years of my secondary school life, I couldn't do this.

When I was in Secondary 4, they shifted me to the back.

And that's where I, you know, felt a little bit devious.

I snuck in a little bit of snacks during classes after recess.

I'll just buy these 50-cent crackers and in between I would munch.
F1
F12:38

Yeah, I remember buying— always going to my nearest 7-Eleven because I used to walk to school.

So I would pass by a 7-Eleven on my way to school and I'll go to the 7-Eleven, I'll buy some, you know, the Nerds candy.
F2
F22:51

对。

Yeah.
F1
F12:52

Buy some and then I'll go to school.

And then during class, you know, they are— they're quite noisy because they're like tiny pieces in a box. I would try to cough, and then my partner next to me would be like, I want some too.

And then I'll try to sneak in some snacks for my classmate as well.
F2
F23:10

Hongbin,

Hongbin, I feel like that's the worst snack you can eat in class.

Not only is it noisy because it's so crunchy, but correct me if I'm wrong, Nerds are little, little bits of candy, right?

If you want to pass it to your friends, it's going to be grimy and sticky, and it's going to stick all over your fingers.
M1
M13:25

I mean, you could just pass the box.
F2
F23:27

Okay, yeah, that's right.
F1
F13:28

But exactly, what is the—.
M1
M13:30

Since we're on this topic, right, what is the biggest snack you tried to sneak into class before?
F1
F13:34

I had like a Ferrero Rocher, and then I'll put the whole thing in my mouth, and I'll be like, you know, trying to hide my face behind my textbook.
M1
M13:43

I did potato chips.
F2
F23:46

I feel like I don't want to reveal my childhood too much, but we used to sneak in a— you know, what's that thing called where you boil water?

Kettle,

A kettle.

Yeah, we used to sneak in a kettle at the back of the class.
M1
M13:57

And what do you do with it?
F2
F23:58

To boil water for instant noodles.
F1
F14:01

A whole kettle?
F2
F24:02

对。

Yes.
M1
M14:04

There's no hot water dispenser available to cook your instant noodles?
F2
F24:07

No, we had one there so that we could conveniently eat whatever we want in class.

But this was a long, long time ago.

So if my discipline mistress is hearing me right now, I'm so sorry.

But we were very hungry.
F1
F14:20

We're always hungry.
M1
M14:21

Stop eating in class!
F1
F14:23

And the smell, I don't even—.
M1
M14:25

Wouldn't the kettle also ring?

Like, wouldn't it be whistling?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

How does that work?

Nadia,

Nadia, this is interesting.
F1
F14:31

That's the next level, and I applaud you.

WhatsApp 我们,8855 0893。

WhatsApp us, 8855 0893.

Have you brought in a whole kettle like Nadia has to school to boil water for cup noodles?

What is the snack that you've been munching on behind your textbooks while your teacher was teaching in class?

Let us know.

I know, bring back some memories here.

We would love to hear your thoughts, 8855 0893.

Now, well, what if I told you people are now turning that exact childhood moment, or stress, I might say, into a competitive sport?
M1
M15:08

哇!

Wow!
F2
F25:08

So it's a competitive sport inside the classroom?
M1
M15:12

So technically, all of our habits that we grew up with, it's turning into something that we can eventually win something for?
F1
F15:18

没错。

Exactly.

So there is this brand new trend blowing up on social media right now.

And over in China, it's called sneak eating competitions that have completely gone viral.

So picture this: adults get together in a mock classroom setup.

They're all sitting at, you know, tiny school desks packed with their favorite snacks.

But here's the catch: there's a judge kind of dressed up as a strict teacher roaming the aisles.

And the goal?

Well, you have to eat as much food as possible without getting caught.

So if the so-called teacher turns around and spots you chewing, You are out of the game.
M1
M15:53

Okay.
F1
F15:54

And I mean, it looks like absolute chaotic fun.

The videos of these contests are racking up millions of views.

Would you try to join this competition?
F2
F26:04

I feel like we've talked about a lot of competitions on What's Trending, and we all say that we can ace all these competitions, but this specific one, I feel very confident that I can join and win.
F1
F16:15

I think you can as well, because you're the one who brought in a whole kettle into the classroom.
F2
F26:20

Now that you're telling me about this competition, right, all the memories are flooding right into my brain.

I remember my friends and I, we ate an entire watermelon in class as well.
M1
M16:29

什么?

What?
F1
F16:30

Yeah.
M1
M16:31

Wow, Daria, your secondary school life in your classrooms.
F1
F16:36

I want to be your friend.
M1
M16:37

Seems like it's so much fun, you know, there's so much food with you.
F1
F16:41

I can't, I can't, you know, I don't know.

I can't tell if she's lying or not.
F2
F26:46

It's the truth.

I hope my ex-classmates, I can't remember some of their names, but I hope they are tuning in right now and thinking of all the fond memories we had munching on all these snacks.
F1
F16:54

A watermelon?

A whole watermelon?

That's insane.
M1
M16:58

I can imagine how they're gonna cut it up as well.

Thick skin, I respect that.

But for me personally, I don't think I win this because I'm the type of person who likes to munch openly, snack openly.
F1
F17:07

You chew with your mouth open?
M1
M17:09

No, I don't chew with my mouth open.

I just meant like it's tough for me to sneak my snacks, you know.

I just like to eat it openly.
F1
F17:16

Okay, well let us know, 8855 0893.

Would you take part in this competition and absolutely crush it like Nadia, or fail miserably like Like Nazirul Azrar?

Let us know.

WhatsApp 88550893。

WhatsApp 88550893.

But amidst all the laughing, right, and the comedy surrounding this competition, there is one specific viral moment from a recent competition in Zhejiang Province that has completely stolen the internet's heart.

And I mean, seriously, get your tissues ready for this one, okay?
M1
M17:47

好。

Okay.
F1
F17:47

So during one of these games, an elderly grandfather stepped into the room.

Now, this grandpa grew up in a time and place where he never had the opportunity to go to school.

So he never got to wear a uniform, he never had a desk, and never got to experience what it's like to be a student.

So he signs up for the sneaky eating contest, but when the game starts and everyone else is, you know, frantically stuffing their faces and laughing, this grandpa does something completely unexpected.

Hmm.
M1
M18:17

He barely touches his food.
F1
F18:17

Instead, he just sits there.

He places his hands neatly on the desk, looks around the room, and soaks it all in.

So he wasn't there to win a game or score some free snacks.

He just wanted to know what it felt like to sit in a classroom for just a few minutes.

He finally got to be a student.

Aww, that sounds sweet.
M1
M18:37

You're right, I need my tissues because, uh, my soft spot is the elderly people.
F2
F28:39

And you know what, it's such a heartwarming story, Hongbin, that you brought to the table today because clearly, right, he's just in there to be a student.

And you know what, it's such a heartwarming story, Hongbin, that you brought to the table today because clearly, right, he's just in there to be a student.

学生。

Student.

And you know, they say you can be a student for life, right?

And obviously he wants to be the perfect student, right?

And not a naughty student eating sneakily in class.
F1
F19:00

I know.

I mean, just reading the story, I'm tearing up a little bit.

But do watch the video.

You can just search it up, sneaky eating contest China old grandpa.

And you can just see him being a well-behaved student.

He doesn't do anything.

Everyone around him is just like trying to frantically stuff their face, and he's just soaking in that moment because he's never got to be a student before, and he just wants that experience, right?

Now, the internet has been in absolute tears over this video.

Commenters are saying he didn't come to win a contest, he came to claim his very first classroom.
M1
M19:35

对。

Yeah.
F1
F19:36

And I mean, it's such a beautiful reminder of the things we completely take for granted, and it really makes you think about our own lives, doesn't it?

So I want to open up the WhatsApp lines to you guys as well as to you both, Nadia and Naz.

Looking at that grandpa finally getting his moment in a classroom, what is one childhood experience you've always wanted to have?

WhatsApp 我们,8855 0893。

WhatsApp us, 8855 0893.

Naz?

Naz?
M1
M110:01

Oh, well, this is actually a very difficult question.
F2
F210:04

You're still a kid.
M1
M110:05

Hey, but that doesn't mean I didn't have things that I couldn't do.

Actually, I thought of going for a family holiday.

That is something that me and my family didn't manage to do growing up as well.

And I thought that maybe one day we could experience or relive something that I want to do in my childhood days, right?

We just go on a family holiday together before, you know, time passes by and then all of us become adults, have our families, etc., etc.
F2
F210:30

I mean, on the topic of this elderly man going into the classroom, right, if I had to say one childhood experience I always wanted to have is maybe visit my grandparents' home country, because both my grandparents on my mum and dad's side are not from Singapore, and I have not managed to actually experience how childhood was for them in their own specific home countries.

So if I had the opportunity to go back, I would want to experience that, and they get to experience their childhood as well, right, at the same time.

So yeah, I think maybe if I had a chance to do that, I would definitely want to try.

Hong Min?

Okay, what about you, Hong Min?
F1
F111:06

Well, I've been, I've been very blessed.

You know, with the opportunities that I've been given.

So I think I've done all the childhood experiences that I've always wanted to have, but I want to relive one of my childhood experiences.

I think I want to add on to that, Nas, because it's been a while since I've gone on a family trip with just me, my mom, and my dad.
M1
M111:31

对。

Right.
F1
F111:31

I think it's only when I was, you know, maybe 5 or 6. Then we would go to places like Bali, Phuket.

And then once I was in school, every summer break, every winter break, they always put me into tuition centers.

And there was barely any, you know, family bonding moments where we get to travel as a family.

There was one where I tried to encourage my mother to have a mother-daughter trip after my graduation because I never got a graduation trip.
M1
M112:00

对。

Right.
F1
F112:00

During my high school graduation, everyone else, all of my friends were going to their graduation trips.

I didn't get to go because my mom was like, you have an exam coming up.

And I was taking the Chinese HSK exam and she wanted me to study.

So while everyone was out there vacationing, I was studying by myself for this exam.

So I didn't get to go.

So I said, mom, you know, it should be a trip between you and me.

A mother-daughter trip.

So I didn't get to have it after my high school, and I proposed it again for my uni graduation trip.

She ditched me to go to Europe with her friends, and I still didn't get to go on my graduation trip.
M1
M112:40

Oh no.
F2
F212:41

Yeah, I feel like maybe now she'll be more open to the idea because maybe back then she's like, I still have to babysit this little girl, you know.

It's not a holiday for me.

It's like I want to go on a vacation, but it's like more work.

So maybe now, Hongbin, you're an adult, right?

She's probably like, okay, it's time for Hongbin to be the mom and take charge of our holiday.
F1
F113:03

Maybe, maybe so.

Well, let us know your thoughts.

WhatsApp us, 8855-0893.

What is one childhood experience you've always wanted to have?

Maybe your family couldn't afford that specific summer camp.

Maybe you never got to throw a massive party, or maybe you just wanted to learn how to ride a bike.

Let us know.

WhatsApp 8855-0893。

WhatsApp 8855-0893.

Do you guys know how to ride a bike?

不会。

No.

Oh, I was gonna say yes, obviously, who doesn't?

But I'm so sorry to jump the gun.
M1
M113:33

Yes, I don't.
F1
F113:34

Um, yeah, well, that's a childhood memory you should have.
M1
M113:37

Yeah, I did try learning it, but I think somewhere around down the road— what am I even saying?

Somewhere down the road it didn't really happen for some reason.
F1
F113:47

But yeah, that's okay.

It's never too late.

I think this story, especially about the grandpa, it just reminds us that it's never too late.

Even if it's a childhood kind of experience that a lot of children have when they're younger, you can still experience it in the older days, right?

So I think we should book a date for a weekend and we should rent a bicycle and get Naz, and we'll teach Naz how to ride a bicycle.
M1
M114:12

Yeah, so here's the thing, right?

You know where they say the first step—.
F1
F114:15

Why are you rejecting my idea here?
M1
M114:18

The first step to learning how to ride a bike is to be able to fall, right?

So they say that if you're able to fall and you're able to break your fall, then you're set.

Now the thing is, I'm not as young as I used to be.

If I fall, it's gonna take some time to heal.

We can put on the training wheels for you first, Naz.
F1
F114:36

Yeah, it'll be a tricycle.
M1
M114:37

Tricycle?
F1
F114:38

Yeah, you know, the ones with 3 wheels.

Well, and then we'll slowly upgrade you into a 2-wheeled bicycle, you know.
M1
M114:47

Okay.
F1
F114:48

We will get there, we'll get there, and we'll record it for all of our listeners to take part as well.
